The results of the match for internal medicine in the National Resident Matching Program over the past decade were described in the January 1988 issue (1). These data can now be updated with the results of the 1988 and 1989 matches. Detailed analyses on these matches will be published (2, 3).
In Table 1 the results for each type of program are presented. The number of categorical programs has decreased slightly as has the number of positions: 5% fewer positions were offered in 1989 than in 1985. U.S. students matched have decreased in each year since 1985; 21% fewer matched
