To the Editor: Recent reports have described the association of chronic liver disease and lichen planus (13); however, there is uncertainty about the prevalence of chronic liver disease in patients with lichen planus (4, 5). We carried out a prospective study of 65 patients diagnosed macro- and microscopically as having oral lichen planus. Each patient was examined and a complete medical history including information about the ingestion of potentially hepatotoxic drugs was obtained. Each patient was tested for transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, protein, and serologic markers for hepatitis B virus.
