Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been commonly regarded as useful and relatively safe in treating painful musculoskeletal syndromes and disorders. There is a $2 billion worldwide market for these drugs, and more than 70 million prescriptions were written in the United States alone this past year. Therefore, the article by Griffin and colleagues (1) in this issue on NSAID use and death among elderly persons is actually part of a current of mounting experience, reports, and studies that has seriously challenged the safety of these agents as presently used in the practice of medicine (2).
