Hepatitis B vaccines have been shown to be highly effective for preventing hepatitis B for several years or more in many populations at high risk worldwide. Attention has now turned to establishing the duration of protection offered by the vaccine and the need for vaccine booster doses. In the United States, the licensed vaccine has been widely available for more than 5 years, which is the duration of reliable protection originally estimated by the vaccine's manufacturer.
