    Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a common disorder and a major public health problem (1). It is hoped that appropriate intervention will reduce morbidity and mortality resulting from vertebral and hip fractures complicating the disease. The National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference on Osteoporosis (2) has recommended a calcium intake of 1000 to 1500 mg per day for all postmenopausal women and has advised that postmenopausal estrogen replacement therapy should be considered individually by the patient and her physician. This preventive approach is supported by extensive basic, clinical, and epidemiologic research (3), and the therapeutic benefit of estrogen in established postmenopausal osteoporosis
