A New Look at Clinical Privileges for Procedures

In preparing guidelines for clinical competence in specific medical procedures, the American College of Physicians (ACP) intends to suggest minimum criteria necessary for competent performance of the procedures. It is hoped the guidelines will be useful in education and evaluation, but especially during the course of privilege delineation decisions.

In addressing the questions of why the ACP has begun such action, a number of influencing factors should be recognized.
