As the number of cases of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) approached 40 000 in the United States alone and the AIDS epidemic expanded to 112 countries worldwide, the III International Conference on Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) convened 1 June 1987 in Washington, D.C. The conference was held 6 years after the first description of the syndrome and 4 years after the cause was first identified—the retrovirus now called human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The meeting attracted nearly 7500 participants and featured more than 1200 papers reflecting the intense international effort to develop effective strategies for preventing and treating HIV
