The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has been involved in the development of isolation precautions for hospitalized patients for more than 20 years. During outbreak investigations conducted in the mid-1960s, the CDC recognized that few hospitals in the United States had organized policies or procedures for isolating hospitalized patients with community-acquired or nosocomial infections. To assist hospitals in the development of rational policies for isolation precautions, the CDC convened an expert group of consultants in 1967 to develop recommendations for isolation procedures.
