Hodgkin Disease as the Initial Manifestation of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

To the editor: Hodgkin disease has been associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) (1-5). However, seropositivity to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in a patient with Hodgkin disease is not by itself seen as meeting criteria for the diagnosis of AIDS. On the other hand, Scheib and Siegel (3) and Temple and Abe (4) have postulated that patients who are seropositive for HIV and Hodgkin disease should be seen as meeting the case definition of AIDS. In agreement with these authors, we report the case of a 28-year-old homosexual man who had Hodgkin disease as the initial manifestation of AIDS.
