    To the editor: As specialists in the treatment of eating disorders, we were pleased but also alarmed by the position paper on eating disorders ( 1 ) that was recently published in Annals. We were pleased to see the focus on the need for practicing physicians to recognize the increasing prevalence of anorexia nervosa and bulimia, to learn to identify these disorders, and to be familiar with and screen for the medical complications that may occur.

    Although the position paper also correctly pointed out that medical management is very important in the treatment of eating disorders, we were surprised at
