Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

In 1981 the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was identified in the United States. From June 1981 to January 1986, over 16 000 persons in the United States were reported as having AIDS (1), and it is estimated that 40 000 persons will develop the syndrome during 1986 and 1987 (2). Approximately 75% of persons who currently have AIDS are homosexual or bisexual men (3). Others affected include intravenous drug abusers, heterosexual contacts of bisexual men, and infants born to mothers with AIDS (4).
