    Various therapies have been used to treat patients with active malignant insulinoma (1-3), which comprises 10% of all beta-cell tumors of the pancreas (1). Somatostatin, a tetradecapeptide found in the hypothalamus and gastro-entero-pancreatic system, suppresses several endocrine hormones (4). However, because of the short halflife (5 to 10 minutes) of endogenous somatostatin, several analogs with longer-acting properties have been synthesized (5). Recently, compound 201-995 (Sandoz Pharmaceutical, Inc., East Hanover, New Jersey), an octapeptide with a 10 to 20 times longer half-life and a 50 to 100 times greater potency has become available in United States.
