In contrast to speculation about the future of the physician investigator, real information on academic medicine manpower has been provided by a little-known committee of the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine. A decade ago, the National Research and Service Awards Act (NRSA) (P.L. 93-348), the legislation that established training grants and fellowships in biomedical and behavioral fields, required that an oversight committee publish periodic reports. Consequently the National Academy of Sciences formed the Committee on National Needs for Biomedical and Behavioral Personnel to assess research personnel needs, the distribution of such personnel by subject area, and the kind
