Finland, an affluent country whose population is approximately 4 800 000, has five medical schools, each contiguous to the five university hospitals that serve as the country's five tertiary care centers. The medical schools are located in Helsinki, Tampere, Turku, Oulu, and Kuopio. The explosive growth of Finnish medical services and facilities has occurred since 1960, before which time the country had had only one medical school at the University of Helsinki.
