IN RESPONSE:
In our Table, data on reductions in mortality noted in the column titled "Mammography Effectiveness" are meant to refer to reductions in breast cancerspecific mortality. We understand that the precise population effects of mammography on all-cause mortality remain an area of active and lively research discussion. A summary of this complex area is beyond the scope of this letter, but the interested reader is referred to the Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network (http://cisnet.cancer.gov) and several other sources (1-3) for in-depth reviews of this topic.
