IN RESPONSE:
We appreciate Dr. Workman's attention to the language used in describing the case in our paper. We agree that clarity and specificity in communicating with families are essential. The case narrative, however, was not intended to fully detail all of the conversations; rather, it focused on the process of forgoing treatment while maintaining care. A separate article in this series details the importance of and strategies for communication in palliative and end-of-life care (1), and we recommend it to Annals readers.
