Secrecy in Science: The Flock Worker's Lung Investigation

right arrow Miriam Shuchman, MD

6 April 1999 | Volume 130 Issue 7 | Page 616

IN RESPONSE:

Annals asked me to provide an in-depth exploration of the story about Dr. Kern. That sort of journalistic investigation strives for objectivity. For the record, I agree that what happened to Dr. Kern was ugly. First, a private company attempted to prevent him from presenting at a scientific meeting. Then, his hospital and university failed to support his right to present, and they subsequently dismissed Dr. Kern from his job. In my view, those institutions should have supported Dr. Kern in his fight for academic freedom and open scientific discourse. I've said as much in an opinion column (1). But my report in the "Currents" section of the Annals was not the place for my personal views.
