New Cardiovascular Training Track: Reinventing the Wheel?

right arrow Ira S. Nash, MD, and Valentin Fuster, MD

1 July 1998 | Volume 129 Issue 1 | Page 73

IN RESPONSE:

We thank Dr. Shefferman for his observation and agree that our proposed training program resembles his own postgraduate experience. Since he trained, however, there has been a steady trend toward longer and more specialized postgraduate pathways; this is both a consequence and cause of the prominence of specialists in U.S. medicine. If training programs of the sort that Dr. Shefferman and many of his contemporaries completed still existed, we would have no need to "reinvent the wheel."
