AD LIBITUM
Call of the Pipes
Angelee Deodhar
15 June 1998 | Volume 128 Issue 12 Part 1 | Page 1020
From a hospital bed
I watch the leaves of autumn
dance a strathspey, a reel
in tartans of russet, gold
to a skirl of celestial pipes
and I, a piobair barraichte*
am back in the Highlands a caird
with my tartan wrapped companion
under my arm
together we pipe sweet music
watch others dance
now the music's all inside
the rales, the rouchi, the tympani
only the doctors hear it
through their stethoscopes
my angled driftwood fingers
play on the tubes
they've hooked me to
while I await my turn to dance
to the final call of the pipes.
*(Pronounced PEA bar bah RISH ta)
