TO THE EDITOR:
We read with interest Dr. Goldman's editorial [1]. In 1986, shortly after Kurtz and Goodman wrote about the adult medicine specialist [2], we posted in our office waiting room an explanation of what an internist is. Our patients were grateful and uniformly told us that they had no clue as to what "internist" meant. They somehow knew we are not interns, but patients expected some kind of "internal" examination. We certainly need to do better in a competitive patient care environment in defining what we do.
We also need to do better as a specialty in leveling the playing field in a competitive residency recruitment environment. Unfortunately, medical students do not seem to be sure what it is internists do in delivering primary care to adults.
