AD LIBITUM
To Elisabeth
Robert H. Palmer, MD
1 October 1997 | Volume 127 Issue 7 | Page 570
Each morning when I leave the door
And, turning, look for you once more,
I find your laughing little face
At its familiar window place.
You cannot talk, nor can sound pass
Between us, through the double glass.
No movement that the eye can see-
And yet, how much you say to me!
What sense perceives you reaching so?
Strange unity! Eternal flow
Of replicating chemistry
That's now in you, though still in me.
Each one in turn, the river bed,
Is shaped-and shapes, with those we wed,
the restless current that we bear,
The changing heritage we share.
You wave good-bye; the living cell,
Defined by change, must keep its pace.
Unchanging bell that naught can quell:
The memory of your laughing face.
