AD LIBITUM
Sunday Morning, Long-Term Care Wing
Don Colburn
15 January 1997 | Volume 126 Issue 2 | Page 151
The whole hillside stares back,
rain-bright green of the pines and grass,
and hardwoods coming late into spring,
bark glistening black.
Now a plume of white floats up,
lengthening in the updraft like smoke, or silk,
or breath. When it thins to fitful vanishing,
the green hill reasserts itself and the glass
half-reflects the long pastel walls
broken into doorways. Nothing, not even
another burst of boiler-wasted steam,
disturbs the glycerin air.
