AD LIBITUM
Commencement, 1996
Stanley H. Schuman, MD, DrPH, LLD
15 June 1997 | Volume 126 Issue 12 | Page 999
Seated on a platform
Next to a chancellor,
Unfamiliar robes and lights
Make me sticky.
I fidget with a printed program
And wait to be called.
Beginning to feel anxious,
I try to sit up straighter.
Suddenly, I recall
A youth of eighteen
Unnerved, afraid
To open the envelope
From the Admissions Office ...
\
Next, I remember
Trying to steady
The retractors for a surgeon
Who is humiliating me
For inattention
(after two nights without sleep).
I hardly hear the chorus
Of laughter, at my expense.
Now my name is called.
I hear applause, I rise.
A velvet hood brushes my neck.
Cameras flash
I retreat to a seat
Feeling quiet, serene.
Then I think back
Again, to the intern
Who endured the pain,
Afraid of quitting.
Who, like others,
Needed a hint of hope
For a better tomorrow,
The youth who
Turned to his patients,
And they,
Sensing his need,
Filled his cup.
