This text, which is intended for general internists and family practitioners, differs from the big internal medicine texts in its frequent use of algorithms and its detailed discussion of practical matters in diagnosis and treatment. Distinctive chapters in the opening section are those on optimal use of laboratory services and on interactions with other health care professionals. Gynecologic problems are covered in detail. The closing chapters address palliation, ethical and legal issues, and social services. The first appendix is an atlas (text and drawings) of the most frequently used diagnostic and therapeutic maneuvers.
