AD LIBITUM
Concerning Emma
Phillip J. Cozzi, MD
15 June 1996 | Volume 124 Issue 12 | Page 1085
I want to speak with you concerning Emma.
Pupils fixed, vent-dependent, she lives
as a swollen eggplant on its stem.
I understand you gave her many joys,
sixty years of prior health,
a strong voice and will, and I think
you must be very proud of her who
independently returned respect to you.
I know you are very busy and
I do not want to hold you further,
but now that I am entrusted
with her care I need your help
for though I met her only late
I must tend the leaf as best I can
and, anticipating other seasons,
turn the soil.
