15 October 1995 | Volume 123 Issue 8 | Page 636
We thank Drs. Karjalainen and Friman for their letter about our recent report on the risk for and prevention of infection with blood-borne pathogens in sports. They refer to an outbreak of hepatitis B among track-finders in Sweden in the 1960s. Although we were aware of this outbreak, we did not cite it in our review because the published reports had not epidemiologically established the manner in which hepatitis B virus was transmitted. We recommend using standard epidemiologic and laboratory methods to investigate the occurrence of infectious diseases in sports so that we may understand the risks and identify opportunities for prevention. We agree that it is important to use appropriate infection-control procedures in athletic settings and to educate coaches, trainers, and athletes about preventing the transmission of blood-borne pathogens.
