The Atlas of Heart Disease (Eugene Braunwald, series editor) provides a detailed and comprehensive review of many aspects of cardiovascular medicine. Volume 3 is a pictorial update of the most recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiopulmonary diseases, including cardiac tumors. Pathophysiologic principles, diagnostic imaging and methods, and treatment are the basis for the presentation in Volume 3. Many echocardiograms, angiograms, and computed tomographic scans are accompanied by illustrations of associated microscopic and gross pathology specimens. The text is divided into four sections: cardiopulmonary diseases, surgical interventions, venous thrombosis, and insufficiency and cardiac tumors. In the first section, topics include copulmonale, pulmonary embolism, and primary pulmonary hypertension. The second section discusses surgical interventions in acute pulmonary embolectomy, the use of right ventricular circulatory support in cardiac surgery, and heart-lung transplantation. Section three considers the diagnosis of venous thrombosisacute, subacute, and chronicthe treatment of venous thrombosis, and prevention. Section four deals with primary and metastatic cardiac tumors. Each of the main sections was prepared by well-known authorities.
In view of the numerous excellent illustrations included in this book, it is an outstanding buy. I strongly endorse it for medical students, residents, and subspecialists in cardiopulmonary diseases.
