AD LIBITUM
GONE FISHING
Phillip J. Cozzi, MD
15 December 1995 | Volume 123 Issue 12 | Page 960
Billie left for Florida the night before
bronchoscopy was planned. Red snapper, bass,
tarpon, grunt, and grouper swam the shore
as they had always. Mangroves bore
the waves, remained for centuries in place,
but Billie left for Florida. The night before
he left was like all others, more
or less: the bluecrab crawled, dolphin passed,
tarpon, grunt, and grouper swam, the shore
held fast, and bloodless creatures scraped the floors
of seas they've always coursed. Alas,
Billie left for Florida. The night before
him snapped like line; a tarpon soared
to lightless depths to die with hook in place,
while grunt and grouper swam the shore.
In partly dying too, the waters roared
that death is blind and cruel as
Billie left for Florida. The night before
tarpon, grunt, and grouper swam the shore.
