Paul L. Fine. 185 pages. Boston: Little, Brown; 1994. $19.95.
A pocket-sized book designed to ease the transition from student to clinician. The introduction includes a glossary of frequently used words, the new meanings of which are apt to be mysterious to a first-time clinician, such as "floor" (not the intensive care unit), "crit" (short for hematocrit), "meds," and others. Cautions against the use of such words as "gomer," "gorked," and "dumped." Likely to be a one-time read only, but the students who read it may feel more confident about what it is they are supposed to be learning and doing, and more aware of what a privilege it is. The last chapter is called "In Defense of Idealism".
