Not surprisingly, the editors (from the University of Virginia Health Science Center and Case Western Reserve University), consider physiology to be the "basis of medicine" and abnormal physiology to be the stuff of which clinical medicine is made. The first section is composed of clinical cases followed by questions; the second part discusses each question and supplies page references to the third edition of the authors' book Physiology. Written by the editors and eight other medical physiologists, Case Studies in Physiology is intended primarily for medical students, but the detailed table of contents would make it easy for anyone to review the basic physiology of, for example, the Horner syndrome, obstructive airway disease, hyperaldosteronism, or pulmonary edema.
