LITERATURE OF MEDICINE
Reviews and Notes: Endocrinology: Endocrinology
1 May 1995 | Volume 122 Issue 9 | Pages 735-736
Second edition. Leslie J. DeGroot; ed. 3423 pages. Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders; 1994. $450.00.
A medical opus, now in 3 volumes with 9 editors, including Dr. DeGroot; 3 consulting editors; and 16 pages of contributors. In Chapter 1, Dr. A.H. Lauber says "Medicine is distinguished from the other healing arts primarily by its scientific base, and endocrinology is foremost in this regard." He also reminds us that considering the "current pace of discovery," "the most recent material in this book is least likely to stand the test of time." As would be expected, DeGroot wrote or co-authored 3 of the 22 chapters on the thyroid. A standard and useful reference for medical libraries and those who can afford a copy for their personal bookshelves.
