Seventh edition. Jennifer K. Nelson, Karen E. Moxness, Michael D. Jensen, and Clifford F. Gastineau. 883 pages. St. Louis: Mosby-Year Book; 1994. $66.00.
Co-edited by two dietitians and two physicians, with extensive contributions and editing by numerous physicians from the Mayo Clinic. The laudable goal of the manual is "to integrate the major developments in nutrition science and food technology with the application of quality nutrition practices ... . " The book is divided into two sections: "Normal Nutrition and Therapeutic Diets for Adults" and the larger "Nutritional Management of Disease and Disorders for Adults." Replete with useful tables, nutritional goals, and advice to physicians on how to write diet orders. New topics since the last edition include the Food Guide Pyramid, nutrition management after organ transplantation, explanation of the new food labeling, a list of recent position papers from the American Dietetic Association, and more. Should be useful for almost any physician.
