Samuel P. Asper with the collaboration of Phyllis S. Bergman. 224 pages. New York: American University of Beirut Alumni Association of North America; 1994. $10.00.
The horrors of armed civil strife for innocent bystanders and the burdens carried by health care professionals are only too well known from the televised images that have come to us from Bosnia and Rwanda. This book presents an inside view of what such strife does to medical facilities and the care they try to offer. Dr. Asper's account draws from his experiences in Lebanon, where he served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the American University of Beirut and as Chief of Staff of the university's teaching hospital in the 1970s.
