Fifth edition. H. Winter Griffith. 598 pages. Philadelphia: W. B. Saunders; 1994. $45.00.

The fifth edition of one of the first good sources for patients provides information on both common and rare diseases, from abruptio placentae to zinc deficiency. The text details basic information, signs and symptoms, causes, risk, outcomes, and so forth, providing everything patients want to know, including when to notify their physician's office. Several diets and exercises are also described. The pages are meant to be photocopied; the book is pre-punched for a three-ring binder.
