Robert W. Katz. 168 pages. Frederick, Maryland: Aspen; 1994. $99.00.
The author, a certified public accountant, is generally sympathetic to physicians. He points out that "in the past a mismanaged medical practice could do well in spite of itself," but adds that soon, "only those practices that know how to operate as efficient businesses will survive." Every practice needs a physician aware of the material in this book, which is presented in a breezy, easy-to-read fashion with chapter headings such as "Physicians can talk about sex easier than they can talk about fees," and "If you think competent people are expensive, try hiring incompetents." The content is relevant even for salaried physicians.
