Dapsone in Thrombocytopenia of the Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome

right arrow Arthur Kavanaugh

15 May 1995 | Volume 122 Issue 10 | Page 802

IN RESPONSE:

Lesprit and colleagues report the potential steroid-sparing effect of dapsone for the treatment of thrombocytopenia in a patient with the antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. As with danazol, dapsone has also previously been used successfully to treat idiopathic immune thrombocytopenia. Although the mechanisms underlying thrombocytopenia in these two conditions may differ, several therapies that have been successful in treating idiopathic immune thrombocytopenia might be useful in treating thrombocytopenia associated with antiphospholipid antibodies. Expanding the scope of potential therapies for this disorder could provide substantial benefits to affected patients by modifying the risks associated with prolonged use of corticosteroids.
