Training General Internists and "STARS"

TO THE EDITOR:
We were amused to learn of the latest training track designations at the University of California [1]. Most medicine trainees will be in "general internal medicine" and the rest, in the STAR program. Those who are chosen for a fourth year of specialization after general training (largely to learn procedures) are guaranteed faculty appointments (presumably, generalists are not).
Annals seems to advocate producing more general internists. Wouldn't you rather be a "STAR"?
