J. Willis Hurst. 297 pages. New York: Igaku-Shoin; 1993. $69.50.

Hurst defines diseases as "new" if they were not recognized earlier; examples include silent myocardial ischemia and stunned and hibernating myocardium. Also discussed are heart diseases such as those caused by the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, ergot alkaloids, the Kawasaki syndrome, and Lyme disease. Hurst sympathetically dedicates this valuable book, consisting of 16 chapters by 26 authors, "to all physicians who struggle against mighty odds to ‘stay up’ with the ever changing field of medicine." This book will certainly help.
