LETTER
Physicians Married to Physicians

TO THE EDITOR:
As a two-physician couple, we have not regarded our fulfilling lifestyle as a "phenomenon" but rather have taken it for granted.
The suggestion that physicians marry other physicians largely because of limited opportunities for socializing with others is flawed. The attraction is multifaceted. Physician couples at once delight in each other's successes, respect each other's work pressures, and appreciate each other's ideals.
As the editors describe, two-physician couples face unique challenges. Although policies regarding coordination of schedules, child care, and maternity (and paternity) leave would be greatly desirable, few accommodations have been made for the decade-old influx of women. However, the restructuring of medical services attendant on the proposed National Health Plan may offer the opportunity to address the needs of two-physician couples. The organizations that show flexibility and imagination will have a choice of competent, well-qualified staff.
