LITERATURE OF MEDICINE

Reviews and Notes: Oncology: Medical Oncology

1 February 1994 | Volume 120 Issue 3 | Page 255

Medical Oncology

Second edition. Paul Calabresi and Phillip S. Schein; eds. 1352 pages. New York: McGraw-Hill; 1993. $135.00.

This new edition of a well-regarded major text reflects careful attention to new aspects of oncology, notably, rapid advances in relevant molecular biology, in retrovirology, in knowledge of the interplay between the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and neoplasms, and in ethical and social issues. The chapter by Gelber and Zelen on the planning, conduct, analysis, and reporting of clinical trials may have value, despite its focus on oncologic treatments, for those running clinical trials in other fields.
