IN RESPONSE:
Mr. King correctly states that the three groups of participants in our study had no statistical differences in pack-years of cigarettes smoked, although the value was higher in the placebo group [1]. Most of our participants were nonsmokers. Current cigarette smoking would be considered more pertinent in a prospective study measuring rates of bone loss, and this information was not reported in our article. Cigarettes were smoked during the study by six patients in the calcium group, nine in the estrogen, progestin, and calcium group, and only five in placebo group. These data strongly suggest that cigarette smoking did not lower the rates of bone loss in the placebo group.
