Astrid Heger and S. Jean Emans; eds. 244 pages. New York: Oxford University Press; 1992. $60.00.
The opening chapters offer detailed discussion of the settings with potential for sexual abuse, emotional consequences, interviewing, physical examination, and forensic considerations. Other chapters cover relevant anatomy; illustrate, with a comprehensive collection of good-quality color photographs, typical lesions and kinds of damage; review sexually transmitted diseases; and advise on serving as an expert witness. Five appendixes present examples of protocols. The bibliography carries generously long annotations. This text and atlas is likely to be highly useful to pediatricians and other physicians working in emergency rooms and to specialists in forensic medicine.
