Third edition. Volumes 1 and 2. George R. Schwartz, C. Gene Cayten, Mary Anne Mangelsen, Thom A. Mayer, Barbara K. Hanke; eds. 3379 pages. Philadelphia: Lea & Febiger; 1992. $189.50.
The book edited by May is an exhaustive text on traumatic and nontraumatic problems needing emergency or critical care management. Sections deal with clinical entities, pharmacologic therapy and technical procedures, and managerial, organizational, and ethical matters. The text edited by Schwartz and colleagues is similar but puts more emphasis on syndromal presentations. Much of the content of both texts is directly relevant to problems seen in other hospital settings; both have been substantially expanded and revised from their previous editions.
