Neil Sol and Carl Foster; eds. 235 pages. Champaign, Illinois: Human Kinetics Books; 1992. $36.00.
Most of this guide is given to standards for proper design and operation of community and school recreational facilities, but some content is relevant to health maintenance and medical services, such as summaries of environmental noise and temperature effects. Appendix B offers sample questionnaires on readiness for physical activity and on health and medical history and forms for physician's clearance and approval, liability release, informed consent, emergency medical authorization, and cardiovascular assessment. Should be useful to physicians providing medical services in school systems and community facilities for sports.
For each day of the year, a short note on an important episode or date (birth, death) in the life of an historic figure, on a major change in concept or practice, on an historic episode in general history with medical implications. A good gift for medical students, who run the risk of spending 4 years without learning that medicine has a long and rich history; a fact a day will probably be easily swallowed and, who knows, may even be digested.
