TO THE EDITOR:
The United Kingdom Nutritional Epidemiology Group is an informal group of individuals in research institutes and academic departments involved in the measurement of dietary intake and in research into appropriate methods for such measurement. This group proposes that a consistent standard of editing of articles on nutrition be widely adopted. We have drawn up a checklist of information necessary for a dietary assessment method to be adequately described. The checklist has been or is being published in 1993 in the following journals: British Journal of Nutrition, Metabolism, Journal of Nutrition, Australian Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics, Journal of Tropical Pediatrics, Acta Paediatrica, International Journal of Epidemiology, European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
We ask that authors consult the checklist before submitting articles on nutrition for publication. We also recommend that authors include in full any questionnaires used (even if much reduced in size) as an appendix, or give a reference if it has already been published. If publication is not practical, we suggest that the authors be required to submit a copy of any questionnaire used for purposes of peer review.
About Letters
The Editors welcome submissions for possible publication in the Letters section. Authors of letters should:
•Include no more than 300 words of text, three authors, and five references
•Type with double-spacing
•Send three copies of the letter, an authors' form signed by all authors, and a cover letter describing any conflicts of interest related to the contents of the letter.
Letters commenting on an Annals article will be considered if they are received within 6 weeks of the time the article was published. Only some of the letters received can be published. Published letters are edited and may be shortened; tables and figures are included only selectively. Authors will be notified that the letter has been received. If the letter is selected for publication, the author will be notified about 3 weeks before the publication date. Unpublished letters cannot be returned.
Annals welcomes electronically submitted letters.
